TECOSIM’s appearance at this year’s SIMVEC will be focusing on greater travel comfort through reduced noise, incorporation of lightweight design and safety requirements and its modern TEC|BENCH and TEC|CONCEPT development processes. The VDI trade congress will also see the specialist in numerical calculation and simulation showcasing its services for structure, fluid dynamics, multi-body and system simulation/1D. This leading trade event for simulation and testing in vehicle design takes place in Baden-Baden, Germany on 22 and 23 November. Visitors will find the TECOSIM booth at position number 35 on the first floor.
A specialist lecture will centre on acoustics and vehicle comfort at 9.35 a.m. on 23 November. Torsten Kroschwald, Technical Manager, and Mark Gevers, General Manager Cologne, will be presenting an NVH complete vehicle project that TECOSIM carried out in collaboration with Honda. During their explanations, the two speakers will reveal how forecast accuracy can be improved in FE analyses of noise emission caused by engine revving. Since tyres carry vehicles and thus have a considerable effect on vibration behaviour due to their suspension and damping properties, the team set about optimising tyres and their characteristics. “The project has helped to produce a great improvement in forecast quality,” explains Torsten Kroschwald.
Safety versus lightweight construction: CAE study on using PLEXIGLAS® in vehicle windows
Automotive manufacturers impose strict safety requirements on vehicle glazing materials, yet glazing offers great potential for lightweight design. A side window made of a special PLEXIGLAS® moulding compound is being showcased on the TECOSIM booth. This glazing pane is about 50 percent lighter than comparable glazing made from conventional mineral glass. Evonik commissioned TECOSIM to study a PLEXIGLAS® test workpiece in collaboration with the Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences’ Institute for Mechanics and Materials Research (IMM). The study aimed to establish its crash behaviour and document the findings in a CAE validation study. Existing knowledge on the material was extended thanks to the studies and verified in a comparison between a hardware test and simulation.
A major advantage lies in the fact that the project partners were able to access data from one of TECOSIM’s TEC|BENCH models when creating the test workpiece and performing the subsequent simulation. This reduced the time and costs for the project significantly. The findings from the CAE validation study form a solid basis for entering into talks with automotive manufacturers to extend the use of the PLEXIGLAS® moulding compound. Processes and methods for current challenges
The engineers will also be showcasing both new and established products and services at SIMVEC. TECOSIM will be presenting its understanding of reverse engineering with TEC|BENCH. The advantages of virtual benchmarking play a major role in modern automotive development, which is largely dominated by constantly changing general technical conditions and globally networked processes. “TEC|BENCH allows manufacturers and suppliers to meet current challenges, such as the increasing use of new materials and the growing complexity of automotive engineering due to alternative drive systems,” explains Martin Westerwald, Managing Director at TECOSIM. “We notice that automotive manufacturers are incorporating virtual benchmarking into their development process to an increasingly greater extent.”
SIMVEC will also see TECOSIM demonstrating a new approach to accelerating the development process in the early concept stage with TEC|CONCEPT. This approach consists of an ingenious method to calculate component or complete vehicle designs which pinpoints optimisation potential not only during the early development phase, but also in detailing at a later stage.
The TEC|WRX software application will also be on display on the booth. Based on Altair’s HyperMesh, it was developed by TECOSIM engineers. TEC|WRX automates many individual steps in simulation model creation. Its toolbox thus makes an engineer's working day far more efficient while also reducing costs. The quality of simulation models produced has also been enhanced.
